Lahore, Southgate, Restaurant Review
Indian cuisine has been influenced by a 5,000-year history of various groups and cultures interacting with the subcontinent, leading to the diversity of flavors and regional cuisines found in modern-day India. But you don’t have to travel thousands of miles to taste some truly thrilling Indian cuisine. Lahore in Southgate offers sumptuous cuisine that will tantalise your tastebuds. We visited the restaurant on a Sunday lunchtime and were treated to some of the freshest tasting food I’ve had in a long time. Lahore opened in February of this year and is steadily building a name for itself in Southgate as the place to come to for a special celebration.
The restaurant is stylishly decorated in a fancy, modernist style with beautiful pictures on the walls of places in India. As I savoured my food, I also pondered on the quotes on food that also adorned the walls. I especially liked the one by Luciano Pavarotti, who is clearly a man who enjoys his meals: “One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” That’s an adage I can also ascribe to.
Even the humble samosa is given a fiery kickstart at Lahore. A lovely, crunchy outer coating and a filling of tasty vegetable morsels with chilli. I also couldn’t resist ordering the chicken kebab starters, tender and lean minced chicken that were great value for money - £2.50 for two pieces. I would recommend the vegetable dishes like sag aloo and the karahi bindi. So often you go to restaurants and the veg is disappointingly overcooked. But here, they are still fresh and have bite. A wonderful example of combining spice with fresh produce for a great flavour.
For the main dish I chose the Karahi king prawn curry, which is one of my favourite dishes. I just couldn’t get enough of this, with plump and juicy prawns that were just begging to be scooped up with the aromatic sauce.
I’m a big fan of dry, tandoori dishes and for me, the star was the grilled baby lamb chop. They were cooked to perfection, with a fantastic saffron-red colour, so looked good as well as tasted good. You get a very generous five per portion, and at £7.95, this is great value for money. Lahore is a top-quality Indian restaurant which offers you a Maharah’s feast at price which is very affordable.
